Commonly used terms:

S3S is a description of finish pertaining to solid wood species. It represents "Surfaced Three Sides", which indicates that two faces have been “planed”, and one edge has been processed with a "straight-line" rip saw, or “jointer” which renders the edge straight and smooth. The fourth edge is left rough.

S4S is a description of finish pertaining to solid wood species. It represents "Surfaced Four Sides", which indicates that all four edges of each board have been “planed” and sanded to the desired dimensions.

Board foot is the unit of measure for lumber in the United States. It is the volume of a one-foot length of a board that is one foot wide and one inch thick. The board footage is measured before any processing is done to the lumber.
